We all know that dogs have the power to transform our lives. Up until today I have thought that dogs have the power to make only their family’s lives much better, but hold your breath because the story does not end here. In an article read today, I was able to learn that 6 dogs have actually transformed the lives of many people. These 6 brave dogs have done some deeds so very significant for Planet Earth, that have somehow shaped the world we know today. You think that the following 6 heroic dogs need more recognizement, then share this post…
1- Laika The Stray Space Dog
In 1954, the Soviet Union scientists trained the mild-mannered, stray into space. They wanted to prove that life could be sustained during takeoff and in outer space. Even though they had no ability to get her back down to Earth, the scientists sent Laura into orbit. Sadly the stray dog died, and the real cause of death was overheating.
“She will forever be known as one of the pioneers of space travel for humans, and for that, she is a hero.”
2. Balto, The Husky Who Saved An Entire Town
In 1925, the town of Nome, Alaska needed vaccines transported in the midst of a diphtheria outbreak as a blizzard raged in the dead of winter.
Unfortunately the town was inaccessible because of the winter blizzard, so mushers and their sled dogs brought the medicine from over 674 miles through remote Alaskan terrain. The temperatures were around 60 below zero, but Balto and his handler traveled through the harsh conditions to make it to the town. Because of Balto and sled dogs like him, Nome was saved from the possibility of being wiped out, entirely.
3. Donnchadh, The Dog Whose Actions Resulted An American Revolution
In 1306, Donnchadh’s owner, Robert the Bruce had his eyes on the Scotland throne. Well Edward I of England went after him to thwart his plans, but fortunately the dog protected his master. Soon after Robert the Bruce went on to reign.
“Generations later, his descendant, King George III, angered American colonists to the brink of sparking the American Revolutionary War. America as we know it fell into the fateful paws of a dog, centuries ago.”
4. Jofi, The First (Unofficial) Therapy Dog
I guess most of us know Freud nowadays, but what we have missed was his dog who accompanied him on many of his sessions. The psychotherapist explained that his patients seemed more relaxed, comfortable, and candid in the presence of his Chow Chow.
5. The Pooch Who Co-Invented Velcro
You know those burs that stick to your clothes after a walk through the woods? Well when Swiss inventor George de Mestral took his dog out for a jaunt during the 1940’s, he noticed these pesky spheres sticking to his dog’s fur.
He then examined them under a microscope, and saw that the burs were able to cling by their tiny hooks. And that is how Velcro was inspired and invented.
6. Buddy, America’s First Sight Service Dog
In 1927, Morris Frank had become completely blind due to multiple injuries to his eyes. He read somewhere that dogs could be used as guidance for disable people. He meet a female German Shepherd named Buddy who was trained little by little to serve to those less fortunate. This is how the whole Service Dogs training started. Buddy returned to America, he opened the first institute to train these Service Dogs. What a contribution to this country, and the world!
