Living with diabetes is being always aware of your condition and making sure that you keep it under control as mush as you can. Doing is stressful enough for an adult, let alone a young boy. Luckily to his aid, he has his dog that gives him comfort and helps keeping him healthy.
The young boy suffers from type 1 diabetes. This condition is caused because the body looses his ability to regulate blood sugar. That is why even the slightest surge or drop in his blood sugar can be dangerous.
Although the boy is seven years old now he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was just two years old. Like any other concerned parent, his attained all necessary equipment to monitor and regulate his blood sugar. But even though they got him all the medical equipment that he needed they felt that there was something else missing.
Than they got the idea to get a diabetes detection dog for their sweet little boy. They both love animals so they had no doubt that his son would fall in love with a dog too. Diabetes detection dogs are trained to sniff when a patients blood sugar levels are too high or too low. When the dog sniffs that something is quite not right alerts a caretaker to inject insulin on time.
After a long search, the family was able to locate a group that trained diabetes detection dogs. Soon after the group matched the boy with a smart, friendly and skilled puppy.Right after the training the dog was ready to serve and help the young boy.4
Whenever the dogs sniffs that something is not right he alerts the parents and they give him treats after that. Now the dog loves to alert because that means he will be rewarded.
Especially one night his assistance was remarkable. While the boy was sleeping the dog noticed a sudden drop of his blood sugar and went on waking up the mother. Luckily she got to him on time and everything went back to normal soon after.
This picture is captured that same night and shows how loyal and alert is the dog towards the young boy. How he cares deeply for his health and goes way and beyond to make sure he stays on track.
But more importantly the dog is his companion. Not only does he save the boy when he needs medical assistance but he is there for him to play, snuggle, run, laugh. He truly is the best service dog ever for this family.
In this family he is not considered as a pet, quite the opposite. He is their hero, their confidant and their family member.
