There is a really meaningful campaign going on right now at the Missouri Humane Society, where the Shelter Buddies Reading Program pairs kids age 6 to 15 with fearful dogs to prepare them for life in a forever home. First the kids have to go through a 10 hour training program just to prepare for the campaign. Once they fully understand what to do, and how to do it, the kids sit in front of a she dog’s kennel and read to them from a book. The following pictures will show you how this beautiful initiative unfolds.

“We wanted to help our shy and fearful dog without forcing physical interaction with them to see the positive effect that could have on them,” program director Jo Klepacki told The Dodo. “Ideally that shy and fearful dog will approach and show interest. If so, the kids reinforce that behavior by tossing them a treat.”
“When children tell stories to the dogs, it also helps them develop their own reading skills. Hearing a child reading can really calm those animals. It is incredible, the response we’ve seen in these dogs.”
I truly thank whomever had the initiative to start this campaign. In my opinion this campaign is a win-win situation for the dogs, but also for the kids as well. Not only this campaign helps dogs socialize with kids/humans, but it also helps kids to appreciate animals.
The following video will show you the dedication of this kids, to help dogs. They know that these dogs want to get a forever home, and the best way to help is making them social. Not only the kids read to these dogs, but they also create a beautiful relationship. Even though the dogs can’t understand what the kids are reading, they can understand that these kids are there for them. Thank you to everyone for doing this. You are truly appreciated.
