How To Pick The Perfect Dog Name

There are a lot of amazing things about having a dog, and one of the funniest is coming up with a perfect name for your pup. Maybe some of you had a name before getting the pup, maybe some of you are a month in and still haven’t found the perfect one. Its hard to make a decision so significant and permanent. Below in this article you will find a guide to help you find the perfect dog name for your life companion.

OLD MAN/LADY NAMES

If u ask me personally, I adore when dogs have old people names. Using a classic name for your pup is unique and regal. Who doesn’t love a gentleman dog named Albert, Eugene, Seymour or Walter? How about a lady dog named Agatha, Alma, Flora or Harriet? Source: Amusing Time

SOMETHING FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD

Childhood is a big source of nostalgia. Some of my friends picked the name based on their childhood experiences, one of them named her dog after the street she lived when she was little. Another friend of mine named her dog after cliche opening line in books I read growing up (“somewhere in the distance, a dog barked” – I named him Somewhere, thus turning it into “somewhere, a dog, barked”). Search in your memories  and see what special names you can come up with!

NAME BASED ON LOOKS

If your dog is brown, you can play with names based on brown color. Some good names are: Brownie, Rolo, Chocolate, Coffee, Cocoa, Sienna, Chestnut, Caramel or Fawn? Some other names based on your dogs color can be: Black? Blackie, Onyx, Coal, Ebony, Sable, Inky or Noir. White? Snow, Snowflake, Sugar or Ivory. The options are unlimited. Try doing a search for your dog’s coloring and look for synonyms. If you’re dog is striped or spotted, look for those synonyms or consider naming them after another animal that has the same sort of coat. Also if your dog cas marks or identifiers, or if your dog is big or small, this could be a lead to find the inspiration you need. Source: Ada Project

STEAL FROM THE FAMOUS

Have a favorite ‘famous’ dog? Doesn’t matter if is a real life or a Hollywood, what matter is that you can find inspiration in the form of notable dogs. All you need to do is to search for famous dogs. Also if you love books, you can name your pup after a dog in a book. Source: Entertainment IE

YOUR HERITAGE OR FAVORITE PLACE

An other option to consider is to name your dog after your home town. Want to honor your heritage or a foreign land you love? Consider giving your dog a foreign, but understandable, name like Pierre, Fritz or Kaiser. Irish and love the water? Try Murphy, which literally means “off the sea.” Try Googling dog names of your favorite country or common words used in the language.

YOUR FAVORITE FOOD

I personally love to think about my favorite food everyday, do you? Just think how funny would be if you go for a walk in the park and start yelling Pizza, Pizza come here. Okay… Okay i admit it, that one is a little weird. But naming her dog Apple was good enough for Gwyneth Paltrow, it’s good enough for us. To get creative and to push your imagination I am giving you some examples: Alfalfa, T-Bone, Bacon, Fish, Bagel, Lemon, Biscuit, Blondie, Kale and Peaches, to name a few.

THE NAME YOU WANTED TO GIVE THE KID

This is how one of my friend got the name of her dog. Around the age of 11, her parents told her that they went back and forth for ages over my name, finally settling on Loren but forever loving Autumn (and being doomed to never be able to use it, as I was the only girl). Since she knew pretty early on that she probably wouldn’t have kids of her own, she named one of her first dogs Autumn. The name fit her perfectly! So, if you and your partner have any discarded human names, there are some immediate contenders.

NAME BASED ON PERSONALITY

If you’re willing to spend some time with your pup before naming him or her, consider giving them a name based on their personality traits. Maybe they skip down the hall every time you come home (Skip) or have a funny bark (Bowzer). Maybe they’re super patient waiting for food or treats or with your young kids (Patience) or maybe the have the best overall disposition you’ve ever seen (Happy). Love to sleep all day? Snoozy! Loves to be right next to you? Cuddles! Won’t stop peeing by the door? Puddles! You get the idea. Maybe just don’t name your dog Sir Humps A Lot. Or do! Who are we to judge? Source: Dump a Day
