Beckham surrenders to Messi: We have just witnessed greatness

Leo Messi’s debut with Inter Miami could not have gone better. The Argentine scored an injury-time winner in a 2-1 win over Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup. With a splendid direct freekick in the 94th minute, Leo capped an unforgettable day for his new club.

Inter Miami chairman and co-owner David Beckham himself posted an emotional message on social media after the match. “Incredible night in Miami. Thanks to all the fans for creating such a special atmosphere, I’m so proud of this club. We just witnessed greatness…” he wrote, referring to Leo’s goal, which proved decisive.

Messi came on as a substitute and replaced Benjamin Cremaschi in the 54th minute, amid huge expectation and excitement at the DRV PNK Stadium. The Argentinian responded with that goal from a direct freekick.

A ‘love’ that goes back a long way

Beckham has long been an admirer of Leo Messi. He confessed as much in an interview with ESPN months ago, before the Argentinian’s move to Inter Miami was finalised. “Which player do you enjoy playing with the most at the moment,” the journalist asked him. And Beckham’s answer is clear: “Messi, I love Messi. For many reasons, I love him because he is a great player, he has a great personality, he is a great person… I think what everyone loves about him is how he plays the ball, he plays with passion, he plays in a very free way.
