The extraordinary work of the woman who has been taking care of orphaned elephants for more than 50 years

For more than half a century Dame Daphne Sheldrick has rescued and looked after orphaned elephants and other animals in Kenya.

Dame Daphne Sheldrick and her team of Keepers are taking extraordinary care of young elephants who have lost their mothers to poachers. These elephants require round-the-clock attention and love, as they are often traumatized and in shock from watching their mothers die. According to this report that originally aired on 60 Minutes, the price of elephant tusks have skyrocketed in recent years, leading to an increase in poaching.

Daphne Sheldrick has been running the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust — named after her late husband who was a leading crusader against poaching — for over 25 years. In this video, she says that elephants have all of the best qualities of humans without any of the bad. After watching this video, I couldn’t agree with her more.
